What is Responsive Web Design?

We get asked a lot what responsive web design means, how it can help people’s online experience and why their site would benefit from having this? Lets explain in detail.

Responsive web design is a modern day approach to building websites that work on mobile devices, small screens and desktop computers. By using this, it involves minimum resizing and panning (pinching your iPhone screen to zoom in).

A website built to work across all platforms and devices adapts the current layout to the screen by using fluid; proportion based grids using percentages rather than pixels or points.

More and more devices are on the market with various screen sizes and resolutions; using responsive web design means that no matter what the next trendy new phone will be, your site will always look good. Additionally, this saves a lot of time in the future; meaning we won’t need to constantly update or code different versions of your website to make it available and accessible from every screen size.

Why do you need a mobile site?

In this day and age it’s easier to grab your mobile to look at a website as they are compact and convenient. Mobile phones save you the hassle of carrying a big, heavy laptop around with you to fire up to browse the web. Due to the popularity of using hand held devices, your website needs to be mobile friendly and simple. If you have to pan and zoom in to see your website on a mobile, most people will leave the website and go to the next link down in Google. This means you are losing potential clients and lets face it, no one wants to lose custom! So, it makes sense to have a site thats easy to view and navigate.

How does it work?

A responsive web site simply changes and adapts to the screen size you are viewing from. Take our site for example, if we view it on a desktop it looks like a standard website.

This is perfectly fine to desktop users, but what about mobile users? This would be a bit of a fuss to view and wouldn’t be easy to navigate. Now lets view the site on a mobile.

The menu has been hidden into an easy to use drop down menu, the banner has shrunk and also the right content section has slid under the left content section. This layout makes it much more user friendly and accessible for mobile users with no pinching or panning, just an easy to view and navigate website.

It makes sense to give your users the best possible experience no matter how they view your website.
